Trump apparently left NATO summit in Ankara using a decoy operation

Ankara – 13 August 2026: US President Donald Trump left Ankara on 8 July after the NATO summit under extraordinary security precautions. As US media reported and a senior US government official confirmed, Trump was moved unnoticed to a smaller military aircraft after publicly boarding a presidential aircraft. The reason was reportedly indications of a possible threat linked to Iran.

The operation was apparently intended to create the impression that Trump would depart on the large government aircraft. According to The Washington Post, the president left the aircraft on the side facing away from the cameras. He was then reportedly taken by an airport service vehicle, of the kind normally used to supply aircraft, to another plane.

On 13 August, the Associated Press news agency reported, citing a senior government official, that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent flew on the aircraft that remained behind. In doing so, the government essentially confirmed an operation whose sequence had previously been reconstructed by several US media outlets. Neither the White House nor the Secret Service provided details on the nature or credibility of the threat information.

Trump himself commented on the incident on 11 August, saying that he had been the target of threats. Enhanced security measures had already been evident during the trip. For the journey from Ankara to the British military airfield at Mildenhall, the president did not use the new presidential aircraft throughout, a Boeing 747-8 originally from Qatar. Specific reasons for the change had initially not been made public.

Decoy operations and last-minute changes to travel plans are part of the protection of US presidents. What was unusual in Ankara, however, was that parts of the delegation, including cabinet members and members of the press corps, apparently remained aboard the aircraft that served as the visible reference point for Trump’s departure. It is not known what additional precautions applied to its passengers.

The NATO summit took place in Ankara on 7 and 8 July 2026. According to the White House, discussions included higher defense spending by alliance members and the expansion of European arms production. According to media reports, the security concerns surrounding Trump’s departure were linked to tensions between the United States, Israel and Iran, as well as possible activities by Iranian actors or allied groups.

So far, the government has confirmed only that the measure was based on a security assessment. After arriving in Mildenhall, Trump appeared before the traveling press again on the evening of 8 July.
