Fontainebleau – 17/07/2026: Two 18-year-old men have been formally charged in connection with the major forest fires in the Fontainebleau region and have been remanded in custody. According to the Fontainebleau public prosecutor’s office, they are a volunteer firefighter and a student. The justice system is investigating their alleged involvement in two separate fire outbreaks in the forest massif south of Paris.
The investigation has been assigned to the Paris Gendarmerie Research Section and the Fontainebleau investigative brigade. The Gendarmerie said that two individuals had admitted their involvement in two separate fire outbreaks. Criminal responsibility and the precise connection between the individual fire sites, the respective actions and the overall damage must now be clarified during the investigation.
The fires began on July 12 and spread rapidly over the following days. According to the Gendarmerie, more than 2,000 hectares of forest were affected. Around 800 firefighters and approximately one hundred gendarmes were deployed at times. The two main fires were considered under control after firefighting operations, but had not yet been completely extinguished on Thursday, July 16.
The case carries particular significance because the affected forest area is one of the most important natural and recreational areas in the greater Paris region. It also highlights the growing importance of vegetation fires for security policy in the Île-de-France region. Authorities had already warned of an increased risk due to drought and high temperatures before the start of the summer season. For investigators, the initial priority is now to establish the individual circumstances surrounding the fires allegedly caused.
President Emmanuel Macron visited Fontainebleau on Thursday, July 16. According to the Élysée, the visit was intended for emergency personnel and the people involved in fighting the fires. Macron reaffirmed the state’s support in dealing with what the presidential office described as a particularly intense forest-fire season. No specific new aid or reconstruction measures were mentioned in the statement on the visit.
Pretrial detention does not amount to a presumption of guilt. In French criminal proceedings, it serves, among other things, to safeguard the investigation, prevent possible coordination between suspects or address a risk of reoffending. Guilt and any potential sentence can only be decided by a court after the investigation has been completed. According to the authorities, further investigations into other fire sites in the Fontainebleau area are ongoing.
