Two Firefighters Die During Operation Near Bordeaux-Merignac Airport

Merignac – 21 July 2026: Thick smoke rose over the area at the edge of Bordeaux-Merignac Airport on Tuesday afternoon. While emergency personnel were battling a fire near the airport, two firefighters died. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed the deaths during question time in the National Assembly, saying he had received the news from the prefect of Gironde.

According to information available so far, the fire broke out in Merignac, west of Bordeaux, in the early afternoon. It affected a building in an area outside the airport grounds themselves, near the P4 long-stay car park and commercially used buildings. The exact cause of the fire and the specific circumstances in which the two firefighters died had not yet been publicly clarified by the evening.

More than 100 of their fire service colleagues remained on duty. They received support from extensive aerial resources. For people on the ground, the major operation also meant disruptions to everyday life: access roads to the airport were closed, and flight operations were significantly affected. How long the disruptions would continue depended, by the evening, on the further progress of firefighting efforts and safety inspections.

The two deceased firefighters belonged to the Gironde departmental fire and rescue service, SDIS 33. Their names, ages and personal backgrounds were not initially released. In the first hours after such a tragedy, this is more than a formality: relatives must be informed before details are made public. The fire service itself now faces an evening in which the operation continues while two colleagues are missing.

Nunez expressed his condolences to the families, relatives and emergency personnel. The news caused dismay in Gironde and far beyond. Firefighters work where seconds can determine the spread of a fire, escape routes and the lives of others. The fact that two of them died during an operation makes visible the risks behind emergency responses and roadblocks that often appear routine.

For the investigation, the cause of the fire, the course of the operation and conditions at the scene will now be important. At this point, there is no reliable public information as to whether technical defects, the structural situation or other factors played a role.
