A Russian drone strikes a residential building in Romania – Two injured and international condemnation

Galați – 29 May 2026: On Friday night, an incident with major consequences occurred in the city of Galați, located in southeastern Romania. A Russian drone, which had entered Romanian airspace during an attack on Ukraine, crashed onto the roof of a ten-story residential building. The impact caused an explosion and a fire on the top floor of the building. Two residents, a 51-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy, suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. The other residents were able to evacuate in time, thus avoiding further casualties.

The Romanian Minister of Defense stated that the drone had entered Romanian airspace during a Russian attack on civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine, near the Romanian border. The military deployed two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter to monitor the situation. The decision not to shoot down the drone was made to avoid any risk to the population.

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the incident as a “serious and irresponsible escalation” by Russia. Romania informed its allies as well as the NATO Secretary General of the situation and requested a strengthening of air defense. In addition, the Russian ambassador was summoned to express the government’s concern.

NATO and the European Union reacted with strong criticism, describing the attack as a serious violation of European airspace. Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, 47 drone fragments have already been discovered on Romanian territory, but this is the first time a Russian drone has directly struck an inhabited building, injuring civilians.
