A 28-year-old man close to the far left indicted on suspicion of terrorism

Paris – 11 July 2026: The Paris judiciary has placed a 28-year-old man under formal investigation on suspicion of terrorist criminal association. According to information from sources close to the investigation, the suspect is involved in what is known as the far-left movement. After appearing before investigating judges, he was placed under judicial supervision. He therefore remains free, but must comply with strict obligations, such as regular check-ins, contact bans and possible restrictions on residence or carrying weapons. No detention order was issued.

The investigation is being conducted by the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office in Paris, with the support of the General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI). The proceedings were opened following information indicating a possible plan for violent acts targeting members of the security forces. The authorities considered the suspicions sufficiently substantiated to open a judicial investigation “for criminal terrorist association aimed at attacks against persons.” No specific target, method of action or timetable has been officially specified.

With the formal investigation, the inquiry has entered a formal phase. At this stage, the presumption of innocence continues to apply. Investigating judges may order further measures, including searches, analysis of digital data or confrontations. Judicial supervision may be adjusted or lifted if the suspicions evolve or if the person under formal investigation fails to comply with their obligations. These constraints are usually closely monitored in order to prevent possible coordination and reduce the level of threat.

In cases of suspected terrorism, the Paris judiciary regularly relies on the specialized structure of the anti-terrorism court. Cooperation between the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office, investigating judges and the DGSI aims, on the one hand, to detect preparations for attacks early and, on the other, to ensure the preservation of evidence for a possible trial. In comparable proceedings, investigators often rely on intelligence, digital traces, surveillance reports and seized materials. The decisive elements in this case were not immediately specified.

Politically and socially, alleged plans of violence against the police and gendarmerie have for years been a sensitive issue in the security debate. In this type of case, authorities regularly stress that prevention and judicial supervision must go hand in hand. For the defense, the judicial investigation provides the opportunity to consult the case file, request investigative measures and present exculpatory evidence. If, at the end of the proceedings, the evidence is insufficient to refer the case to a specialized court, it may be dismissed in whole or in part. Conversely, if the suspicions are confirmed, the case may involve other persons under formal investigation, additional acts or stricter obligations.

The competent authorities did not immediately provide further details on the identity, methods of action or possible co-defendants under formal investigation. No information is yet available on a possible hearing date.
