Up to 500,000 faithful expected for papal Mass in Paris

Paris – 10 August 2026: Up to 500,000 faithful are expected for the major open-air Mass of Pope Leo XIV in Paris. Since Monday, August 10, 2026, interested people have been able to register for the celebration at Place de la Concorde and along the Champs-Elysees. The service is scheduled for the afternoon of September 26.

The Mass is part of the Pope’s apostolic visit to France from September 25 to 28, 2026. The Holy See confirmed the trip following invitations from the French head of state, the country’s church authorities and UNESCO. Leo XIV is also expected to visit the headquarters of the UN cultural organization in Paris during his stay.

The program in the capital begins on Friday, September 25, with a meeting with young people at the Stade de France. The following day, the Pope is to celebrate Mass in the area between Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Elysees. The central location offers space for an exceptionally large gathering, but also presents organizers with considerable logistical challenges. Access points, visitor flows and the arrival of numerous pilgrimage groups must be coordinated.

According to church officials, registration does not yet constitute a final guarantee of a place. Its main purpose is to estimate the expected turnout and prepare travel arrangements. Dioceses and organizers intend to inform participants about the designated access and transport routes. Separate pre-registration arrangements are available for groups from other parts of France.

The French Bishops’ Conference and the Diocese of Paris are organizing the visit together with other church bodies. In addition to Paris, stops in Lourdes and Metz have been confirmed. In Lourdes, Leo XIV is to celebrate Mass on the grounds of the pilgrimage site. The trip is scheduled to conclude on Monday, September 28, with a service at Saint-Etienne Cathedral in Metz.

The figure of 500,000 expected faithful is an organizers’ planning forecast, not a registration total already reached. Should the estimate be confirmed, the Paris celebration would be one of the largest public religious services of the year in France. Full details of security arrangements, road closures and admission times were not yet available on Monday.

For Leo XIV, the trip would be his first visit to France as head of the Catholic Church. The reservations are intended to provide those responsible with a reliable basis for capacity planning at Place de la Concorde and on the Champs-Elysees.
