US-Iran Peace Agreement Signed in Versailles: Macron Welcomes “Moment of Peace,” Tehran Emphasizes Obligation to Implement

Versailles – 06/17/2026: On June 17, 2026, the United States and Iran signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Versailles intended to end the 110-day conflict in the Middle East. President Donald Trump called the agreement a “historic opportunity” and highlighted its significance for regional stability.

French President Emmanuel Macron praised the peace agreement as a “moment of peace” and urged all parties involved to fulfill their obligations swiftly and completely. He emphasized that only through consistent implementation can a lasting peace solution be achieved.

The Iranian government stressed the necessity of closely monitoring compliance with all terms of the agreement. Tehran underscored the central role of the pact for national security and stability in the region. At the same time, the leadership warned of potential delays in implementation that could endanger the fragile peace scenario.

The agreement provides for an immediate and permanent cessation of all military operations between the conflicting parties. Furthermore, all sanctions against Iran are to be lifted. A reconstruction fund amounting to 300 billion US dollars will be established to promote the country’s economic development and rebuilding.

In return, Iran commits not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons, as already stipulated in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) of 2015. Additionally, Iran has agreed to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, improving supply security in the Middle East.

The agreement has not only received praise but also skepticism. Especially from Trump’s political base, criticism arose as the concessions to Iran were seen as too extensive. Some observers perceive this as contradictory to Trump’s earlier demand for “unconditional capitulation” by Iran.

A formal signing ceremony is scheduled for June 19, 2026, in Geneva, Switzerland. The international community is closely watching the next steps to ensure the agreement leads to a sustainable peace solution in the Middle East.

The situation in the region remains tense. Successful implementation of the agreement could significantly alter the geopolitical balance and contribute long-term to increased security and cooperation in one of the world’s most conflict-ridden zones. The international community will pay special attention to all parties keeping their promises and to the progress of reconstruction efforts.

The coming months will reveal how stable this peace agreement truly is and what impact it will have on the political and economic conditions in the Middle East.
