U.S.-Iran Peace Agreement: Trump Announces Deal Amid Skepticism and Unresolved Questions

Paris – June 16, 2026: U.S. President Donald Trump announced a peace agreement with Iran on June 14, 2026, which includes the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the U.S. Navy blockade that had lasted for months. The agreement aims to end the 106-day conflict between the two countries and ensure the safe passage of oil tankers. The official signing ceremony is scheduled for June 19, 2026, in Switzerland.

Despite the positive start, important questions remain. A senior Iranian official stated that the final agreement will regulate not only the passage through the Strait of Hormuz but also Iran’s nuclear program and the gradual lifting of U.S. oil export sanctions. Both sides intend to conduct more comprehensive negotiations within 60 days after mutual agreement.

However, critics point out that this interim agreement does not address fundamental issues. In particular, sections concerning Iran’s ballistic missile technology and its role in proxy conflicts in the Middle East were excluded. Moreover, it is unclear under what conditions and on what schedule U.S. sanctions will be lifted, and governments and experts have warned that the implementation process could be difficult.

Israel has responded skeptically to this peace agreement. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that Israel will continue to independently protect its own security interests and expressed doubts about whether the agreement can continuously guarantee regional peace. Therefore, the agreement is being carefully evaluated from a regional perspective as well.

Among the Iranian people, there is a mix of hope and caution. Many recall the U.S.’s unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear agreement in 2018 with suspicion, but at the same time view this agreement as a diplomatic success that could alleviate international isolation and economic pressure.

In the coming weeks, it will be decisive whether this interim agreement can serve as a foundation for sustainable peace. Its impact on Middle Eastern security and the stability of the global energy market are also very important evaluation factors. Experts advise caution, as many details and specific measures have yet to be decided, which could determine the success or failure of the agreement.

The importance of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about one-fifth of the world’s crude oil trade passes, is also significant from a global economic perspective. If the blockade is lifted, it could affect energy prices and ease geopolitical tensions, but the region remains one of the most complex and unstable areas in the world. Numerous challenges and conflicts of interest create political pressure and could make the peace process difficult.
