US Vice President J. D. Vance travels to Switzerland for talks with Iran

Zurich – 21 June 2026: US Vice President J. D. Vance arrived in Zurich on Sunday morning for official talks with Iranian representatives regarding Iran’s nuclear programme. The aim of these talks is to resolve the Middle East conflict, which has been ongoing for more than a year, and to strengthen the fragile ceasefire that will serve as the basis for a lasting settlement. The talks are scheduled for 60 days, during which a comprehensive peace agreement will be sought. Vance was accompanied by his wife Usha Vance, and they arrived at around 6 a.m. at Emmen Air Base near Lucerne.

The American delegation led by Vance also includes special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. On the Iranian side, participants in the talks include parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The talks are taking place at the Bürgenstock resort in the Swiss Alps, which provides a neutral and distinguished setting thanks to its luxurious surroundings and view of Lake Lucerne.

This meeting is the first direct negotiation between the US and Iran since the summit in Islamabad in April 2026. The main topic is the hope that Iran will once again grant UN inspectors access to its nuclear facilities. These facilities had previously been targeted by air strikes by the US and Israel, which worsened the conflict. The last UN inspection took place before the start of the war in June 2025.

Despite the willingness to negotiate, tensions in the region remain high. Israel and Hezbollah announced on Saturday that they would once again observe the ceasefire—a step that is nevertheless viewed cautiously due to the previous rapid breaches of such agreements. In addition, Iran temporarily closed the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, further escalating tensions between the parties to the conflict. US President Donald Trump threatened to impose shipping fees for transit through the strait if a final peace agreement is not reached within 60 days.

The international community is closely following the talks, as their outcome could have far-reaching consequences for security in the region and around the world. Vance and his negotiators emphasise the importance of constructive dialogue and a lasting compromise capable of ending the prolonged conflict.

The next few weeks will show whether the talks lead to lasting peace or whether the conflict flares up again. Switzerland, as the host, offers an appropriate neutral setting and extensive experience in mediating international conflicts for these historically important negotiations.
