USA and Iran Sign Peace Agreement: Ceasefire, Opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and Continuation of Nuclear Negotiations

Washington – 06/17/2026: The USA and Iran signed a peace agreement on June 17, 2026, that includes a 60-day ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the continuation of nuclear negotiations. This agreement was brokered with the support of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and takes effect immediately.

According to the agreement, the USA allows Iran to sell oil freely and is considering lifting sanctions related to nuclear issues, weapons, and human rights concerns. In return, Iran commits to diluting highly enriched uranium under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). However, there is no guarantee for long-term commitments, as President Trump indicated the possibility of abandoning the agreement if dissatisfied.

The agreement aims to restore the pre-war status, addresses regional tensions including the Israeli occupation in Lebanon, and promises $300 billion for the reconstruction of Iran, likely provided by Gulf states. It has sparked criticism in Washington and represents a setback for Israel. Economically, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is expected to lower global energy prices and stabilize trade routes. However, the agreement remains controversial, with little published text and uncertain political support.

The agreement includes 14 points, among them the immediate end to all military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, and the complete and immediate lifting of the naval blockade against Iran. The formal signing is scheduled for June 19, 2026, in Switzerland.

A senior Iranian official stated that the final draft of the memorandum covers a broad range of topics, from Tehran’s nuclear program to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and US exemptions from oil sanctions. A final agreement is to be discussed within 60 days after approval by both sides.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is expected to relieve global energy markets, as the strait previously enabled about 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. The formal signing of the agreement is planned for June 19, 2026, in Switzerland.

Despite positive developments, the international community remains tense about the implementation of the agreement and the further negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program. The coming 60 days will be crucial to ensuring long-term stability in the region.

The German federal government welcomes the efforts for a peaceful solution and emphasizes the importance of diplomatic negotiations for regional security.

The international community is closely watching developments and hopes for a sustainable peace solution in the Middle East.
