US and Iran Continue Attacks - Fears of Further Escalation

Bushehr – 20/07/2026: The United States continued its airstrikes on targets in Iran overnight into Monday. According to the US military, it was the tenth consecutive night of attacks. Several locations in Bushehr were hit, the provincial governor said via the Iranian state news agency IRNA. The city is located near Iran’s only nuclear power plant still in operation. Whether facilities at the nuclear power plant were damaged could not initially be independently confirmed.

The latest wave of attacks follows a renewed escalation in fighting between Washington and Tehran. The US military cites, among other reasons, the protection of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is a key route for global energy exports. Iranian officials, however, view the attacks as an expansion of the war and announced further responses against American interests and their allies in the region.

According to consistent reports, Iran attacked targets in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan in recent days. The affected countries activated their air defenses; incoming projectiles and drones were intercepted in Kuwait. Bahrain, where the US Fifth Fleet is stationed, also reported alerts and defensive measures. Information on damage and possible casualties could not be fully independently verified on Monday.

American losses are increasing domestic political and military pressure on the government in Washington. According to the US Department of Defense, three US service members have been killed since Friday in operations connected to the conflict. According to the latest figures, the total number of US military personnel killed in the war with Iran stands at 17. Two soldiers died in Jordan on July 17 while defending against Iranian missile and drone attacks.

The continued attacks show that neither side is currently prepared to de-escalate. While the United States presents its airstrikes as a targeted military response, Iran is seeking to raise the cost of the conflict for Washington by attacking its regional partners. The combination of attacks on military targets, threats to commercial shipping, and the proximity of some operations to civilian and nuclear infrastructure remains particularly dangerous.

There is still no sign of a political agreement to contain the violence. Rather, the latest events of July 20 underscore the risk that the conflict will spread beyond Iran and the United States to the Gulf states. For civilians in the affected countries, the repeated missile and drone alerts represent an ongoing burden. International energy and maritime traffic also remains dependent on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
