Early heatwave in France: health risks and impact on events

France is experiencing, at the end of May 2026, an exceptionally early and intense heatwave. Temperatures reaching up to 36 °C have been recorded in cities such as Bordeaux and Paris, which significantly exceed the usual averages for this time of year.

These extreme temperatures have already caused health emergencies. During running events in Île-de-France, several participants required emergency medical care due to the heat last Sunday. Additionally, one death was recorded in Paris during another race, although the exact cause remains to be confirmed.

The current heatwave results from a phenomenon called the “Spanish Plume,” characterized by the arrival of warm air from Spain towards France. This meteorological phenomenon causes a rapid and significant increase in temperatures, unusual for this season.

In recent years, France has already suffered the effects of repeated heatwaves. In summer 2025, nearly 6,000 deaths were recorded, directly linked to high temperatures. This figure highlights the serious health risks associated with extreme heat conditions.

In response to the current heatwave, Météo-France issued a “Yellow Heatwave Alert” for 13 departments in the west, a rare measure for the month of May. This alert level calls for particular vigilance, especially for vulnerable populations.

The earliness and intensity of this heatwave in France illustrate the growing challenges posed by extreme weather events. Such phenomena are expected to become more frequent in the future, requiring increased attention and preparedness at all levels.
