Ollières – 16.06.2026: In the commune of Ollières in the Var department, a ban on trucks with a permitted total weight of more than 13 tons was recently imposed. This measure aims to increase the safety of residents after the large number of heavy trucks repeatedly caused problems on the narrow roads. Mayor Olivier Barthélémy initiated the ban after citizens repeatedly expressed their concerns about the traffic burden and the resulting hazards.
The commune’s narrow infrastructure was daily penetrated by up to 600 trucks, which not only compromised traffic safety but also the quality of life for the inhabitants. A resident reported that he only leaves his house wearing a safety vest because the danger of being overlooked is too great. Such situations highlight the need for action recognized by the municipal administration.
Despite the municipal ordinance, the Var prefecture rejects the ban. The authority argues that the affected road is an important traffic artery, especially for interdepartmental transport, and sees significant economic disadvantages from a truck ban. In France, there are general driving bans for trucks over 7.5 tons on weekends and public holidays, but their regional implementation and stricter restrictions like those in Ollières require approval from the prefecture.
This stance by the prefecture creates tensions in the commune. Mayor Barthélémy emphasizes that protecting citizens comes first and calls for finding alternative routes to keep heavy traffic away from the town center. He points out that the current traffic volumes are not designed for the local infrastructure and that urgent action is needed.
The situation in Ollières is exemplary of many small communes in France facing the same challenges from transit traffic. Balancing the needs of traffic flow and protecting the population is often hard to achieve and requires flexible, situationally adapted solutions.
No agreement has yet been reached between the commune and the prefecture. The debate over the truck ban highlights the complexity of traffic regulations and the necessity of a balanced approach. Therefore, the commune of Ollières remains in a state of heightened tension while solutions are sought that meet both economic requirements and the residents’ quality of life.
The development of the situation in Ollières is being closely watched by many, as it illustrates typical conflicts between local self-government and state traffic authorities in France.
