Vegetable Seller in Kherson Survives Suspected Russian Drone Attack

Kherson – 04.08.2026: A 52-year-old vegetable seller was injured by a drone in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, according to Ukrainian reports. Released footage shows a man running down a street away from a low-flying unmanned aircraft. Shortly afterward, the drone explodes a few meters away from him. The man survived the attack.

According to the Ukrainian police, he suffered a blast injury, a concussion and shrapnel wounds. He is receiving medical treatment. The incident reportedly occurred in the morning in the Tavriiskyi district. The exact sequence of events and the drone’s Russian origin could not initially be independently confirmed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the incident as part of a targeted hunt for civilians in the Kherson region. Russia initially did not comment on the specific attack. Moscow regularly rejects accusations that its forces deliberately attack civilians. Responsibility for individual attacks is often difficult to determine independently in areas close to the front line.

Kherson lies on the western bank of the Dnipro River. Since its recapture by the Ukrainian army in November 2022, the city has repeatedly been attacked with artillery, missiles and drones. Russian troops control areas on the opposite eastern bank of the river as well as other parts of the region. Because of the short distance, small drones can reach their targets within a short time; warnings therefore often offer residents only limited protection.

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has repeatedly documented civilian casualties caused by short-range drones along the front line. Many of these devices transmit camera images to their operators in real time. In the mission’s view, this technology generally makes it possible to identify people and vehicles more accurately before an attack. Reports of attacks on pedestrians, private cars, emergency responders and aid workers therefore fuel suspicions that civilian targets were deliberately selected in individual cases.

An independent United Nations commission of inquiry had already concluded, in relation to earlier documented drone attacks in parts of southern Ukraine, that violations of international humanitarian law and serious international crimes may have occurred. Such assessments relate to investigated series of cases and do not replace an examination of the current incident.

For Kherson’s remaining population, the attacks are increasingly disrupting everyday life. At the end of June 2026, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission warned that drones and mines were hampering evacuations and the supply of food and medicine in areas close to the front line. According to Ukrainian authorities, the injured seller was taken for medical treatment.
