Consumer watchdogs warn: Many sunscreens on Temu, Shein and AliExpress fail tests

Paris – 08.07.2026: The French consumer protection organization Que Choisir Ensemble (formerly UFC-Que Choisir) warns about sunscreens sold on the platforms Temu, Shein and AliExpress. In a laboratory test of ten products ordered online, testers found serious defects in nine samples — ranging from insufficient UV protection to problematic ingredients. The results were forwarded to the competent authorities.

According to the organization, several creams missed the advertised sun protection factor by a wide margin. In addition, labels and mandatory information were sometimes incomplete or not compliant with EU and French requirements. In one case a substance was objected to that studies attribute endocrine effects to. The consumer advocates speak of a direct risk potential for users who rely on the advertised protection claims.

Que Choisir Ensemble announced it would report the affected products to the DGCCRF (Direction générale de la concurrence, de la consommation et de la répression des fraudes) and other supervisory bodies. The authority can order spot checks, have listings blocked and initiate sanctions if there are violations of product and labeling regulations. Reporting media indicate that platforms sometimes remove listings after being notified; in many cases, however, they point to the responsibility of external sellers.

The warning is part of a broader debate about product quality on cross-border online marketplaces. In recent months, tests of other product categories on the same platforms have already shown high non-compliance rates. Since spring 2026, politicians and authorities have been discussing tougher tools for foreign marketplaces that deliver large volumes of small shipments to France, such as stricter due diligence obligations, faster delisting procedures and expanded market surveillance.

For consumers the organization recommends obtaining sunscreen preferably through reliable distribution channels, paying attention to complete declarations and certifications, and choosing tested brands when in doubt. Dermatological experts remind that effective UV protection — especially for children and people with sensitive skin — is indispensable. In addition to choosing a suitable product, they advise additional protective measures such as shade, clothing, a hat and sunglasses, as well as generous and regular reapplication.

The study published today is intended as an urgent information offering for the start of the high season. Possible regulatory actions against individual suppliers or listings could follow once authorities have reviewed the submitted notifications. According to media reports, affected brands and platform operators were informed; unified statements were not initially available.
