Paris – 19 July 2026: Counting on fingers should not be prematurely regarded as a disadvantage in preschool children. Several recent studies on early numeracy point to this conclusion. Fingers make quantities visible, help with orderly counting and connect number words with concrete actions. For five- and six-year-olds, this can form a robust bridge between visual counting and more abstract arithmetic.
A study published in the journal Scientific Reports in March 2026 examined a program consisting of twelve 30-minute sessions. Thirty-three children aged five to six took part, while another 37 children formed a comparison group receiving regular instruction. The finger exercises included counting, recognizing quantities and simple arithmetic problems. In overall early numeracy, there was a statistically significant advantage of moderate strength.
However, the study does not permit a blanket equation of finger use with learning success. The researchers themselves emphasize that additional practice time may explain part of the effect. Improvements also varied depending on the subarea: they were particularly clear in number knowledge and counting, while there was no clear effect on understanding the cardinality and order of numbers. Small sample sizes also limit generalizability.
Stronger evidence comes from an intervention study published in 2025 involving 328 kindergarten children, mostly from France. Children who initially did not calculate with their fingers improved their accuracy in addition problems from 37.3 to 77.1 percent after targeted training. In a control group, it rose only from 39.6 to 47.8 percent. The result was examined in further, smaller studies with controlled comparison groups.
The educational conclusion is nuanced. Finger counting does not replace an understanding of numbers, but it can support it. When counting, a child assigns one finger to each number word. This practices one-to-one correspondence, a stable number sequence and the insight that the last number named represents the total quantity. In problems such as three plus two, subsets can also be represented simultaneously and then counted together.
Not every child benefits in the same way. Earlier research shows that children use the strategy effectively primarily when they already understand key counting principles at least in part. Those who have not yet mastered these foundations need more than a mechanically practiced hand movement. Finger counting is therefore not a cure-all, but it is an accessible learning tool that teachers and parents should not discourage.
As children grow older, the importance of the strategy changes. In kindergarten, it can promote the development of internal number representations. Later, children should increasingly automate calculation methods and retrieve results from memory. The goal is therefore not to calculate on one’s hands permanently, but to make a meaningfully guided transition from visible action to mental arithmetic. The new findings argue against an early ban, not against the development of mental calculation skills.
