Wildfire fronts continue to put Southern Europe under pressure

Palermo – 24.07.2026: The smell of smoke is once again hanging over Sicily. For several days, firefighters, forestry services and civil protection have been battling a series of vegetation and forest fires affecting several parts of the island simultaneously. According to the regional government, more than 1,000 fires have been recorded in five days. On Thursday, around 50 fire sites were still active.

Some 6,000 firefighters, forestry officers and civil protection members are deployed on the island. Water-bombing aircraft and helicopters are supporting ground teams, whose work is complicated by wind, dried-out vegetation and difficult-to-access terrain. The situation remained particularly tense in several areas of western and inland Sicily. For residents, every new plume of smoke on the horizon is above all a source of uncertainty.

The regional government in Palermo stated that all available resources had been mobilized. The priority is first and foremost to protect people, homes and transport routes. Authorities also warned that the danger should not be underestimated: even smaller fires can quickly spread, driven by the wind, to fields, brushland or the outskirts of populated areas. No definitive and officially confirmed information was initially available about the cause of some fires.

Spain is also continuing to face an exceptionally challenging situation. About 100 kilometers north of Madrid, a major forest fire had already affected nearly 32,000 hectares, according to information published on Thursday. Emergency services there are facing a different but equally difficult task: the extent of the burned area is tying up personnel and equipment for several days, while high temperatures further increase the risk of new fires breaking out.

In addition to ground teams, Spanish authorities and emergency services rely on air support and evacuation measures when these become necessary. The experience of recent weeks shows how quickly the situation can change. Flames are not the only danger: smoke, poor visibility, closed roads and difficulties for elderly people or those with health vulnerabilities are also among the immediate consequences.

The fires in Sicily and Spain are separate operations in different landscapes. However, they share the enormous pressure on people protecting their homes, moving animals to safety or working for hours along fire lines. On islands as well as in rural regions, the time between an alert and the first firefighting response often determines the extent of the damage.

For France, looking south and beyond its borders is not merely distant news. The risk of forest fires does not stop at national borders. The ongoing operations underline the importance of preventive measures, keeping access routes clear for emergency services and following local instructions. In Sicily and central Spain, the situation remains dependent on the weather, the wind and the success of ongoing firefighting operations.
