Wildfire in Gironde: Residents Push Back Against the Flames

Saumos – 25 July 2026: The wildfire that broke out near Saumos, north of the Bassin d’Arcachon, on Wednesday continued to spread on Saturday. According to consistent reports, more than 19,000 hectares have now been affected by the fire. In Gironde’s dense pine forests, smoke and changing conditions are complicating firefighting efforts. At the same time, emergency crews are trying to prevent the flames from advancing further toward more densely populated areas.

Because the fire brigade cannot be everywhere at once, some residents are attempting to protect homes and property boundaries with their own resources. They are watering areas and using available equipment while professional crews concentrate on particularly vulnerable sections. However, such individual initiatives carry considerable risks: local authorities are urging the public to strictly follow evacuation instructions and not approach the fire front.

Incident commanders must fight the fires, secure buildings and at the same time organize the evacuation of large areas. More than 20,000 residents and holidaymakers had already been moved to safety as a precaution from the Saumos, Le Porge and Lège-Cap-Ferret area on Thursday. On Friday, authorities ordered the evacuation of the entire Cap-Ferret peninsula. People were also taken out of the threatened area by water.

The figures for the affected area rose sharply within just a few days. On 22 July, initial reports referred to around 1,400 hectares; by the following day, the figure had already reached several thousand. The latest estimate of more than 19,000 hectares refers to the area affected by the fire; it does not necessarily mean that every part of it has been completely destroyed. Fire boundaries and measurements are continually reassessed during an ongoing operation.

Smoke is also affecting the population outside the immediate danger zone. Atmo Nouvelle-Aquitaine warned of elevated concentrations of coarse particulate matter in northern Gironde and the northern part of the Landes department on 24 and 25 July. Sensitive individuals were advised to limit physical exertion outdoors and follow official air-quality guidance.

According to initial information that has not yet been conclusively confirmed, the fire in the municipality of Saumos was probably started unintentionally. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. For the fire brigade and emergency services, the priorities are protecting lives, securing residential areas and ensuring orderly evacuations. The prefecture and emergency crews are continuously issuing instructions for the affected municipalities.
