Wildfire Threatens Residential Neighborhood in Lege-Cap-Ferret

Lege-Cap-Ferret – 24 July 2026: During the night, the smell of smoke hung over the pine forests on the northern edge of the Bassin d’Arcachon. Fire crews battled a wildfire in Lege-Cap-Ferret that, according to Franceinfo, was still out of control in the morning. Their primary objective was to prevent the flames from spreading to a residential area. Several homes were reportedly saved.

Emergency crews worked continuously overnight from July 23 to 24. The situation was considered particularly dangerous because forest, housing and transport routes are closely packed together in this part of the peninsula. Reliable details on possible injuries, the cause of the fire or the final area affected were not initially available on Friday morning. Investigating authorities had not yet commented on the matter.

The municipality of Lege-Cap-Ferret had already reported an ongoing forest fire in the nearby municipality of Saumos on July 22. It urged people to comply strictly with restrictions in forest areas and to follow only official information. Whether, and to what extent, the fire in Saumos was connected to the operation within the municipality of Lege-Cap-Ferret had not yet been conclusively confirmed.

A special wildfire protection plan is in place for the peninsula. The Gironde Prefecture has prepared a procedure that also provides for evacuation by sea in the event of an acute threat. Under the plan, between 10,000 and 14,000 people can be brought to safety within 24 hours, with particularly vulnerable people given priority. It remained unclear on Friday morning whether this plan had been activated.

The fire demonstrates how quickly a blaze in the forests of Gironde can become a danger to residents and holidaymakers. The prefecture points to the severe fires of summer 2022, when more than 28,700 hectares of forest and heathland burned in the department. In such operations, not only fire engines and aerial water drops matter, but also clear access routes, clear warnings and the public’s willingness to follow instructions immediately.

For people living on the affected residential streets, the night was above all a time of waiting: for news from the neighborhood, for the sirens of emergency vehicles and for an answer to the question of whether their own homes could be protected. The fact that several buildings were saved is an important interim success given the still unclear situation. However, it did not mean the all-clear on Friday morning.

Further decisions rest with the fire service, the prefecture and the municipality. Residents and visitors should avoid closed roads and forest areas, refrain from making their own reconnaissance trips, and follow official instructions. Reliable information on the cause of the fire, damage and possible return times for affected residents can only be expected once incident command has stabilized the situation and the responsible authorities provide an updated assessment.
