Planay – 08.07.2026: A 22-year-old volunteer firefighter died Wednesday morning during an operation against a vegetation fire in the commune of Planay (Savoie). According to matching statements from the Interior Ministry and the prefecture, the man was hit by a falling rock and died at the scene.
The deceased served as a Caporal at the Centre d’Incendie et de Secours in Albertville. He and his colleagues were operating overnight from July 7 to 8 in steep alpine terrain to extinguish smoldering embers and prevent further spread of the fire. Responders described the area as highly slope-hazardous; loose scree and unstable blocks had become further loosened by heat. According to first reports, the accident occurred at around five o’clock in the morning.
Rescue teams, the departmental fire and rescue service (SDIS 73) and the Gendarmerie were quickly on site. Despite immediate measures, the young firefighter could not be resuscitated. Official bodies and colleagues expressed their deep condolences. The prefecture announced psychological support for the unit and the relatives. The name of the deceased was not initially released for privacy reasons.
The Gendarmerie opened an investigation into the exact circumstances. Topographic conditions, slope stability, possible rockfall warning signs and compliance with safety protocols for operations in the particularly exposed section are being examined. The SDIS 73 is preparing an internal incident report in parallel. The aim is to determine whether the situation assessment, securing measures and team deployment complied with guidelines for work in terrain with rock outcrops.
Firefighting associations praised the commitment of volunteers, who carry a large part of wildfire-fighting efforts in rural and mountainous regions. In the Alps, rockfall and landslides are typical secondary hazards during vegetation fires: heat can widen existing cracks in rock faces, vegetation that provided natural cohesion is removed, and firefighting water can add weight to unstable layers. Against this background, experts emphasize the need for closely coordinated situational assessments between the incident command, forestry and mountain authorities.
The commune of Planay and the departmental authorities pledged support for the bereaved. Authorities said they will publish further information on the progress of the investigation as soon as confirmed findings are available. Fire danger in the region remains elevated due to dry weather; the prefecture and the fire services called on the public to keep access routes clear, follow instructions from emergency personnel and avoid open flames near forest and meadow areas.
