Mérignac – July 22, 2026: Two firefighters died in a major fire near Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport. The two members of the Gironde fire and rescue service had been deployed on Tuesday afternoon, July 21. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed the deaths during government questions in the National Assembly. The identities of the two deceased have not yet been officially released.
According to initial reports, the fire broke out in the early afternoon in an overgrown area near a long-term car park, a used car dealership and logistics premises. Black smoke was visible across large parts of the Bordeaux metropolitan area. Due to its proximity to the runway, flight operations were also temporarily affected. Teams operating on the ground and from the air tried to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby facilities.
According to Marc Vermeulen, head of the SDIS 33 fire service, the two firefighters were in an emergency vehicle and were surrounded by flames during the initial phase of firefighting. The exact circumstances remain unclear. What is known so far is that the fire spread with exceptional intensity through dry vegetation.
About 120 firefighters with around 60 vehicles, as well as one helicopter and two firefighting aircraft from the civil protection authorities, were deployed. By late afternoon, the fire had been brought under control. According to preliminary information from the on-site command post, 26 hectares burned. However, as firefighting continued, the deaths of the two colleagues cast a shadow over the scene.
The Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation. It will determine where the fire started and under what circumstances the vehicle was surrounded by flames. According to judicial authorities, 25 investigators supported by forensic experts were sent to the fire scene. It remains unclear whether a human cause, an accident or a criminal act may be involved.
Prefect Sophie Brocas expressed her condolences to the families, friends and firefighters of Gironde. Head of state Emmanuel Macron also conveyed his sympathy to the bereaved families. The city of Mérignac intends to honour the two firefighters who died in the line of duty. Mayor Thierry Trijoulet also noted that the city is particularly vulnerable under these dry summer conditions.
The fire occurred on a day of very high wildfire risk in Gironde. However, the cause of the fire and the specific circumstances in which the two firefighters died are the subject of the ongoing investigation. Until its findings are known, speculation should be avoided. For the Gironde fire service, this deployment to protect threatened areas remains above all a profound personal loss.
