Paris military parade highlights Europe’s security role and support for Ukraine

Paris – July 14, 2026: France is using its National Day parade as a platform to send a signal on European security. Nearly 6,700 soldiers marched along the Champs-Élysées, including around 500 from member states of the Coalition of the Willing. Twenty-five Ukrainian soldiers also took part in the parade. The display combined France’s military presence with public support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.

According to published figures, the parade included 315 vehicles, 98 aircraft and 31 helicopters. This made this year’s event one of the largest military parades in recent years. Two aircraft of the Patrouille de France were flown by joint French-Ukrainian crews. The aerial parade was also supplemented by aircraft from several European partner countries, including Germany, Spain, Italy, Norway, Poland, Greece and Croatia.

Politically, the appearance was closely linked to the meeting of the Coalition of the Willing held in Paris on July 13. France stated that the coalition of 35 countries aims to prepare a lasting peace order for Ukraine and establish reliable security guarantees. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended the celebrations as guest of honor. Numerous heads of state and government from participating countries were also among the guests.

Paris stressed that the coalition is intended to complement, not replace, NATO. This is institutionally significant: France and its partners want to enhance Europe’s capabilities in joint planning, armaments cooperation and deterrence without calling the transatlantic alliance architecture into question. The parade thus showed that the goal of the European security debate is no longer limited to national defense budgets, but to shared military operational capability.

The political backdrop was the government’s theme of a European strategic awakening. France has significantly increased its defense budget since 2017; according to people associated with the parade, it has risen from €32 billion to more than €57 billion today. The additional investment is intended to strengthen readiness, ammunition production, air defense capabilities and the ability to cooperate with allies.

According to French media, this was Emmanuel Macron’s tenth and final parade across his two terms in office. Alongside the foreign and security policy message, the celebration retained its national character. The ceremonial music also incorporated elements of popular culture. However, the core remained its strategic message: France wants to combine military visibility with European solidarity in response to the continuing uncertainty on Europe’s eastern flank.
