Raphael Glucksmann Considering Running in the 2027 Presidential Election

Paris – 28 May 2026: Member of the European Parliament and leader of the political movement Place publique, Raphaël Glucksmann, announced he will decide before the end of summer whether to run in the 2027 presidential election. In an interview with TF1, he said he will use the next three months to “travel the country and propose a new patriotic pact.”

He stressed that he does not want to be just another vote within the democratic left camp, but hopes to unite his political family and promote a single candidate for the non-Mélenchon left. This strategy faces the major challenge of divisions among France’s left-wing parties. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the left movement La France insoumise, currently leads in the polls. Furthermore, Glucksmann’s former Socialist allies are skeptical of his plan.

A recently leaked internal memo describing a deliberate exclusion of workers and younger voters has sparked further controversy. Glucksmann himself has distanced himself from that approach, seeking to attract a broad base of left and centrist voters. His core message is to build a coherent national identity distinct from extreme narratives on both the left and the right.

His political platform focuses on strengthening public education, climate protection, reindustrializing France, and reforming immigration policy. On funding, he advocates stronger taxation of the wealthy, but rejects economists like Gabriel Zucman’s proposal for a 2% tax on corporate assets. Glucksmann emphasizes pragmatism and realism in political implementation.

The goal is to form a broad coalition among the Greens, the Socialist Party, and centrists. Former Socialist leader Olivier Faure has not publicly supported Glucksmann; this will be a key decision point before the meeting on 13 June. That conference is seen as a test of whether Glucksmann can unite a divided left and pave the way for the 2027 presidential election.

Glucksmann made clear that he is not seeking a joint candidacy with Jean-Luc Mélenchon and La France insoumise, because the two sides have fundamental differences on Europe, defense, geopolitics, and energy structures.

His decision comes at a time of deep division in France’s left-wing political sphere, with no figure yet able to effectively unite and oppose the current government and right-wing parties. Glucksmann’s efforts could be decisive in whether the left regains influence in the 2027 election or continues to weaken.
