Presidential Election 2027: Raphaël Glucksmann Rejects Dual Primaries and Calls for Unity on the Left

Paris – 06/04/2026: Raphaël Glucksmann, president of Place publique and member of the European Parliament, has firmly rejected the double primaries proposed by Olivier Faure, secretary general of the Socialist Party (PS), for the 2027 presidential elections. Faure initially plans a primary within the PS, followed by an open primary to all left-wing forces excluding La France Insoumise (LFI). Glucksmann gave a clear refusal to this proposal: he has opposed primaries for a year and will under no circumstances accept two primaries. Instead, he aims for a strategy that unites the entire left and strengthens its action without getting lost in fragmented internal debates.

Glucksmann intends to decide by the end of August whether to run for president. In the coming months, he plans to travel across France and present a “new patriotic pact” connecting the different souls of the left. He emphasized that he does not want to be simply “another candidate from the left wing.” “We must put egos aside,” Glucksmann stated, “to find the right personality to present to the citizens if we want to win the presidential elections.”

The debate within the Socialist Party is tense: Boris Vallaud, president of the socialist parliamentary group, has withdrawn from party leadership because he considers the planned primaries counterproductive and especially too narrow without Glucksmann’s involvement. These internal tensions highlight the difficulties of the left in presenting a common and competitive candidacy in the 2027 elections.

Glucksmann’s call for united action from the left is directed against the fragmentation of left-wing parties and movements. He sees this as a central obstacle to succeed in the upcoming electoral campaign. The ability to reach an agreement could be decisive to mobilize a sufficient number of votes in the face of competition from right-wing and centrist candidates.

The next few weeks are crucial to clarify the political orientation of the left. Whether it will be possible to create a common platform and present a shared candidate will determine their chances.
