Presidential 2027: Raphaël Glucksmann rejects double primary elections and calls for left-wing unity

Paris – 06/04/2026: Raphaël Glucksmann, chairman of Place publique and member of the European Parliament, has strongly rejected the double primaries proposed by Olivier Faure, the secretary-general of the Socialist Party (PS), for the 2027 presidential election. Faure envisions first an internal PS primary, followed by an open primary of all leftist forces without La France Insoumise (LFI). Glucksmann decisively dismissed this proposal: he has been opposing primaries for a year and will under no circumstances accept two of them. Instead, he aims for an approach in which the entire left can act united and stronger, without getting bogged down in fragmented internal party debates.

Glucksmann wants to decide by the end of August at the latest whether he will run for the presidency. In the coming months, he plans to travel across France to present a “new patriotic contract” that should connect the different leftist currents. He emphasized that he does not simply want to be “a new candidate on the left.” “We have to put egos aside,” Glucksmann said, “to find the right personality to be presented to the citizens if we want to win the presidential election.”

The debate within the Socialist Party is tense: Boris Vallaud, chairman of the socialist parliamentary group, has withdrawn from party leadership because he finds the planned primary counterproductive and especially too limited without Glucksmann’s participation. These internal party struggles make clear the challenges the left faces in building a joint and strong candidacy for the 2027 elections.

Glucksmann’s call for a united left strategy is aimed against fragmentation of parties and movements on the left. He sees this as a central obstacle to being successful in the upcoming election campaign. The ability to reach agreement can be decisive to mobilize enough votes in competition with right-wing and centrist candidates.
