Presidential Election 2027: Raphaël Glucksmann Rejects Dual Primaries and Calls for Left-Wing Unity

Paris – 06/04/2026: Raphaël Glucksmann, president of Place publique and member of the European Parliament, has clearly rejected the double primary proposed by Olivier Faure, general secretary of the Socialist Party (PS), for the 2027 presidential elections. Faure proposes first an internal PS primary followed by an open primary of all left-wing forces except La France Insoumise (LFI). Glucksmann gave a firm response to this proposal: he has been opposed to primaries for a year and will under no circumstances accept holding two of them. Instead, he seeks a strategy with which the entire left can unite and present itself more strongly without getting lost in fragmented debates within the party.

Glucksmann plans to decide before the end of August whether he will run as a presidential candidate. In the coming months, he plans to travel across France to present a “new patriotic contract” that connects the various left-wing currents. He emphasized that he does not want to be simply “another candidacy within the left wing.” “We have to put egos aside,” said Glucksmann, “to find the right personality that we can present to the citizens if we want to win the presidential election.”

The debate within the Socialist Party is tense: Boris Vallaud, chairman of the socialist parliamentary group, withdrew from the party leadership because he considers the planned primary counterproductive and above all too limited without Glucksmann’s participation. These internal frictions highlight the challenges the left faces in presenting a strong joint candidacy before the 2027 election.

Glucksmann’s call for a united action of the left opposes the fragmentation of left-wing parties and movements. He considers this a central obstacle to achieving success in the upcoming electoral campaign. The ability to unite could be decisive in mobilizing enough votes in competition with right-wing and centrist candidacies.

The coming weeks are crucial to clarifying the political orientation of the left. If a common platform and a single candidate are achieved, that will determine their chances.
