Presidential Election 2027: Rafael Glucksmann Refuses Dual Primaries and Calls for Left-Wing Unity

Paris – June 4, 2026: Raphaël Glucksmann, Chair of Place Publique and Member of the European Parliament, strongly opposed the dual primary election proposal for the 2027 presidential election suggested by the Socialist Party (PS) Secretary General Olivier Faure. Faure proposed first holding an internal PS primary and then an open primary involving all left-wing factions except La France Insoumise (LFI). Glucksmann expressed a clear rejection of this proposal: he has opposed the primary election for a year and said he would never accept two rounds of primaries. Instead, he stated that he aims to find a way for the entire left to move forward more strongly as one, without falling into divided internal party disputes.

Glucksmann plans to decide by the end of August whether he will run as a presidential candidate. Over the coming months, he intends to tour all over France and propose a “new patriotic contract” that unites the diverse currents within the left. In this process, he emphasized that he does not simply want to be “another candidate of the left-wing camp.” Glucksmann said, “We must put aside our selfishness and find the right person to present to citizens in order to win the presidential election.”

The debate inside the Socialist Party is tense. Boris Vallaud, head of the Socialist parliamentary group, judged the planned primary as potentially counterproductive and especially too limited without Glucksmann’s participation, and he stepped down from the party leadership. These internal conflicts within the party reflect the challenges the left faces ahead of the 2027 election to present a unified and effective candidate.

Glucksmann’s call for left-wing unity aims to prevent the division of leftist parties and movements. He sees this as a key obstacle to success in the upcoming election. The ability to unite could be decisive in gathering enough voter support to compete with right-wing and centrist candidates.

The next few weeks will be very important in clarifying the political direction of the left. Whether a common platform and candidate can emerge will determine their chances of victory. The 2027 presidential election is considered a decisive election for the left to strategically reorganize and overcome internal conflicts to regain significant influence.

The possibility of reaching an agreement is currently uncertain. Opposition to the dual primaries and calls for unity reflect the urgency with which Glucksmann is trying to set the political direction. Negotiations on the optimal approach among the various left-wing factions in France will intensify in the coming months and will have a major impact on the political landscape.
