Funeral Procession in Fleurance: 6,000 People Commemorate 11-Year-Old Lyhanna

Fleurance – 07.06.2026: On Sunday, June 7, 2026, about 6,000 people in Fleurance in the Gers department took part in a mourning and memorial demonstration for the eleven-year-old Lyhanna. The girl had disappeared after leaving school on May 29, 2026, and was found dead six days later, on June 4, in a nearby grain silo.

The event began at 3 p.m. at Square de Verdun and proceeded through the streets of the town center to Place Marcadet. Participants wore white clothing and carried flowers to express their sympathy. At the head of the procession, Lyhanna’s parents held up a white flag with the inscription “Plus jamais ça!” (Never again!).

During the memorial event, an emotional message from the family was read. An aunt read a letter from Lyhanna’s mother, in which she thanked the community for their broad support. The mother described the death of her daughter as “abominable” and apologized to Lyhanna for all the suffering she had endured. The family affirmed their deep love and called for a joint effort to better protect children.

The mayor of Fleurance, Grégory Bobbato, also addressed those gathered. He criticized the institutional failures that may have contributed to this tragic event and emphasized the urgent need for a societal change of mindset to protect the vulnerable.

At the center of the investigation is Jérôme Barella, a 41-year-old family man who is considered the main suspect. Barella denies any involvement in Lyhanna’s death. He was interrogated after his arrest but exercised his right to remain silent. It also became known that Barella had previously been reported multiple times for sexual assaults on minors. However, some of these reports were dropped without further investigation.

The case has caused nationwide outrage and raises questions regarding the effectiveness of justice and police work. Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron as well as Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin described the events as unacceptable and expressed their solidarity with Lyhanna’s family.

The memorial demonstration in Fleurance was an impressive sign of sympathy and the collective grief of the community. It also calls for taking necessary measures from this tragic event to better protect children in the future.

Investigations are ongoing to clarify the exact circumstances of Lyhanna’s death and to identify possible errors in the handling of previous reports.
