Funeral service for Lyhanna in Gers: Municipality calls for respectful commemoration

Fleurance – 12.06.2026: The small municipality of Fleurance in Gers is dedicated today to the commemoration of the tragically deceased 11-year-old Lyhanna. After her abduction at the end of May, her lifeless body was discovered in early June in an agricultural silo in Puycasquier. This discovery caused deep shock and mourning in the region.

Lyhanna’s funeral will take place this afternoon at 2:30 PM at the Fleurance cemetery. The family requested that the ceremony be conducted in dignified silence and with respect. Although the public is invited to the memorial service, the subsequent burial will be held in a private family circle to give the relatives space for a personal farewell.

To commemorate the deceased student, the mayors of Gers have called on all citizens to observe a moment of silence today at 2:30 PM in front of the town halls of the department. The flags have been flown at half-mast to publicly show mourning. This gesture of solidarity is intended to allow the entire community to express their sympathy.

The moving story of Lyhanna has touched not only the region but all of France. President Emmanuel Macron expressed his concern about the population’s trust in state institutions and emphasized that lessons must be learned from this case to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The investigation into Lyhanna’s death is still ongoing. The main suspect is Jérôme Barella, 41 years old. He has previously been charged multiple times with sexual offenses against minors but was never interrogated or detained. Authorities are currently investigating possible shortcomings in the official handling of previous complaints.

Today’s memorial service offers the municipality of Fleurance and the surrounding areas an opportunity to collectively say goodbye to Lyhanna. It is a moment of reflection, mourning, and collective respect for a young life that ended tragically. The sympathy is also evident in how people in the region come together to show strength and support the family in their grief.

Besides the official tributes, the sorrow will remain palpable in the hearts of the people. Many citizens have already placed flowers and candles at the site where she was found to create symbols of remembrance and sympathy. This mourning over the loss of a child raises questions once again about the protection of minors and the effectiveness of prevention, which now need to be discussed with increased urgency.
