Barcelona Grand Départ: Pogačar becomes top favourite – 19-year-old Paul Seixas to make Tour de France debut

Barcelona – 01/07/2026: On July 4, the 113th Tour de France will open in Barcelona with a 19-kilometre team time trial, likely creating the first gaps in the general classification. The organizers will take the teams onto an urban circuit, with iconic locations such as Montjuïc providing the backdrop for the opening stage. The first days of racing will therefore be challenging both technically and tactically, with wind, pace coordination and clean cornering playing an important role.

From a sporting perspective, attention is focused on Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), who arrives in top form after a dominant spring season. His team is considered strong overall, and the Slovenian’s time-trialling ability could see him wear the yellow jersey very early. Traditionally strong time-trial teams such as Visma–Lease a Bike also pose a threat, while other general classification contenders hope not to lose time in the opening stages.

In France, particular attention is being paid to Paul Seixas, the 19-year-old who will ride his first Tour de France for Decathlon CMA CGM. The young Frenchman has shown resilience and sharp racing instincts in demanding one-day races. He is not yet considered a candidate for top positions in the general classification, but his style could lead to attacks on rolling terrain, and he has the ability to support a team leader. For his team, the early team time trial is also an opportunity to organize the lineup and clarify roles.

The route offers an early test: as soon as July 6, the third stage will head into the Pyrenees, finishing in Les Angles—an initial tough challenge for climbers and team leaders that could clarify the hierarchy among the favourites. Since the yellow jersey must be defended in such an early mountain stage, tactical reserves and the quality of teammates are more crucial than ever. Anyone who loses time at the start will come under pressure before reaching the first high mountain passes.

In terms of organization and atmosphere, the Catalan start is expected to draw dense crowds and set a fast pace. Teams that strike a balance between rouleurs and climbers will have an advantage, able to control both the time trial and the transition stages. Paris is scheduled for July 26; overall, however, the foundations of the general classification will likely be laid within the first ten days—whether through an early move by Pogačar or challengers using the Pyrenees to turn the situation around.
