Presidency 2027: Wauquiez signals opening to Édouard Philippe – Distance from Retailleau grows

Paris – 02.07.2026: Laurent Wauquiez has recently clearly signaled his distance from Bruno Retailleau while also showing an opening toward Édouard Philippe. The trigger was a joint appearance on July 1 at an event of the Landjugend, where Wauquiez appeared alongside Philippe. In several interviews he linked this to an appeal that the conservative and centrist electorate should not be fragmented by rigid factionalism ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Inside Les Républicains (LR), strategic debates have been underway for weeks. Retailleau, who leads the party, is pushing for an independent course and a clear LR candidacy. Wauquiez, by contrast, relies on consolidation effects and argues that withdrawals in favor of a broader alliance should not be taboo. The approach is reminiscent of earlier attempts by the French right to find a durable balance between building a distinct profile and the ability to form coalitions. That Wauquiez now underscores this with visible proximity to Philippe gives the move political weight.

Édouard Philippe, chairman of Horizons and a former Prime Minister, is currently regarded in polls as one of the most promising names in the center-right and centrist camp. He points to the need for an organized selection process and cited as a rough framework intra-party or cross-party decision windows between October 2026 and February 2027. A formal candidate nomination has yet to take place; Philippe avoids definitive commitments and keeps his options for alliances open.

For LR the constellation is delicate. Wauquiez, as parliamentary group leader with organizational access in parliament, has visibility but encounters mixed loyalties within the party. Retailleau controls the party structures and fears that an early turn toward Philippe could marginalize LR. An open conflict carries the risk of further splits; a coordinated line, on the other hand, could strengthen Philippe as a unifying candidate—especially where he is also electable for centrist and moderately conservative milieus.

In the short term attention is focused on talks between the LR leadership, Philippe’s circle, and allies in the centrist spectrum. Procedures under discussion range from an open primary to bilateral agreements with withdrawal scenarios. Timing will be decisive: only after the upcoming summer dates in the political calendar is it likely to become clearer whether Wauquiez’s gesture leads to concrete mechanisms for candidate selection or remains, for now, a signal to potential partners. Regardless of the procedure, the question of whether a joint project to the right of center can be organized sustainably is likely to shape the 2027 presidential campaign.
