Appeals Verdict on July 7: Does Marine Le Pen Face Ineligibility for 2027?

Paris – 03.07.2026: On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the Cour d’appel de Paris will announce its verdict in the appeal proceedings over the affair concerning the employment of assistants of Members of the European Parliament from the former Front National, today Rassemblement National (RN). At issue is whether the penalties imposed at first instance — including a multi-year ineligibility — will stand. For Marine Le Pen, this directly concerns whether she may run in the 2027 presidential election.

Two legal points are decisive: if the appeals court confirms both the conviction and the additional sanction of disqualification from office, and at the same time orders its enforcement, Le Pen could be effectively excluded from the race. It remains unclear whether a subsequent appeal to the Cour de cassation would have a suspensive effect. In comparable cases, the practical effect of ineligibility periods depended on whether enforcement takes effect immediately or is stayed until the conclusion of the appeals process. Lawyers point to inconsistent case law regarding supplementary penalties and their timing.

Politically, the RN is preparing several scenarios. Party leader Jordan Bardella is considered the likely replacement should Le Pen be unable to run. Since his election as chairman in 2022 he has reorganized the party and achieved a stable mobilization potential in polls. For the RN’s strategy, a confirmed ban would be a watershed: the party would have to quickly clarify whether Bardella will be officially nominated or whether another ticket would promise more success. Timing also matters: the legal deadlines for sponsorship signatures and the formal registration of candidacies impose tight planning windows on parties.

For the broader party system, the verdict would send a signal. In the center-right and left camps a possible absence of Le Pen would change calculations for run-off strategies. Conservatives and centrists might try to appeal to voters from the RN milieu, while left-wing alliances would in turn model scenarios without the long-time RN lead candidate. If the ineligibility is not imposed or its enforcement is suspended, Le Pen would remain in the contest for the time being — with effects on coalition speculation and campaign rhetoric.

Formally, it remains to be seen how thoroughly the appeals court addresses enforcement questions. Possible outcomes include full confirmation, modifications to the sentence and ancillary consequences, or partial annulment. In any case, the decision expected on July 7 will reorder the starting conditions for the 2027 presidential campaign — either by providing a clear path for Le Pen or by the formal transition to Bardella as the lead candidate.
