RN bolsters its frontwoman: Marine Le Pen leads, Jordan Bardella moves up to number two

Paris – 09.07.2026: Marine Le Pen announced her candidacy for the 2027 French presidential election on July 7 in the presence of party leader Jordan Bardella. The step follows a Court of Cassation ruling on an appeal she intends to bring before the Court of Cassation. With the return of the long-standing front figure to the head of communications, the hierarchy within the Rassemblement National (RN) has been realigned: Bardella, who had recently been developed as a possible alternative, is back in the number two position.

In the months beforehand the 28-year-old had sharpened his profile, partly because he faces no criminal charges and embodies a generational change within the RN. His strong presence in the media and during the European election campaign had fueled speculation that he could become the primary option should further legal risks arise for Le Pen. With the joint appearance the party now sends a different signal: Le Pen claims the leadership role in the presidential campaign, while Bardella supports her on the organizational side.

Within the party there is discussion about a division of labor that envisages Bardella as coordinator of the party apparatus and as a potential member of government should the RN come to power. This model is intended to convey reliability: Le Pen mobilizes the core electorate and leads in major TV formats; Bardella stands for continuity, appeals to younger target groups and handles day-to-day management. Observers interpret the arrangement as an attempt to demonstrate unity while keeping an orderly corridor of power open for the period after 2027.

The legal context remains decisive. Le Pen was convicted in the first and second instances, denies the allegations and intends to exhaust the appeals process. The Court of Cassation procedure does not settle facts but examines legal questions — an outcome that takes time and can overlap with the electoral calendar. Opponents point to a potential risk of ineligibility; within the RN this is portrayed as a calculable process that has been factored into campaign planning.

Politically the reshuffle signals a return to familiar symbols of the RN: personalization at the top, with clear roles beneath. In the short term this gives the party certainty over messaging, responsibilities and scheduling. In the medium to long term the success will depend on whether the dual leadership can maintain the balancing act and discipline: between legal deadlines, addressing economically insecure voters and the claim to remain attractive beyond the hard core. The next markers are the filing of the cassation appeal and the programmatic consolidation of the Le Pen–Bardella tandem heading into the 2027 election year.
