Paris – 09.07.2026: Member of the European Parliament François Kalfon (PS/Place publique) sharply criticized the leadership structure of the Rassemblement National (RN) on Franceinfo’s morning show La Matinale. He said the RN is “Der RN ist eine Familienangelegenheit der Le Pen” and accused the party of arranging internal key positions so that a genuine generational shift in favor of Jordan Bardella would not take place. He added, in essence, that the “Schlüssel des Lastwagens” had been kept by the Le Pen family.
Kalfon linked his criticism to the question under which conditions Marine Le Pen could run again in 2027. “The French people must decide in Kenntnis der Sachlage,” he said, referring to legal proceedings and a conviction in the second instance. Although details of the ongoing legal avenues were not mentioned in the broadcast, Kalfon stressed that political responsibility and personal record are equally decisive for a possible presidential candidacy. To sharpen his point he used a stark metaphor and said Le Pen had “einen Ochsen und sogar eine Herde von Ochsen gestohlen”.
The intervention comes at a time when parties are probing their strategies for the race to the Élysée 2027. Within the RN, Jordan Bardella is regarded as a defining figure of the younger generation and has been discussed in recent years as a potential candidate. Officially, the party leadership has repeatedly emphasized Marine Le Pen’s central role. Kalfon’s move is clearly aimed at generating mobilization effects in left-wing and republican camps and focusing the public debate on questions of integrity, intra-party distribution of power and programmatic clarity.
From the perspective of political observers, the RN is confronted not only with a personnel issue but also with the line on European and economic policy as well as its positioning on the rule of law and institutions. For the Socialists and allied forces such as Place publique, the confrontation offers the opportunity to sharpen the contours of their own presidential strategy and to emphasize fault lines within the right-wing camp. Whether this will lead to short-term shifts in the field of candidates is open; formal nominations are traditionally made closer to the election year.
Franceinfo recorded the interview on 9 July 2026. With a view to the upcoming phase of candidate selection, the Paris political scene expects that statements like Kalfon’s will increase pressure on the RN to create transparency about responsibilities, decision-making processes and the role of the party family. At the same time, the discussion about who will carry the right-populists’ ticket in 2027 is likely to gather further momentum in the coming weeks.
