Paris military parade highlights Europe’s role in security and support for Ukraine

Paris – 14.07.2026: France has placed its military parade for the national holiday at the service of a signal of European security. Around 6,700 soldiers marched down the Champs-Élysées, including some 500 members from countries in the Coalition of the Willing. Twenty-five Ukrainian soldiers also took part. The staging combined the French military presence with explicit support for Ukraine in the war against Russia.

According to published figures, the parade included 315 vehicles, 98 aircraft and 31 helicopters. This made this year’s edition one of the largest military parades in recent years. Two aircraft from the Patrouille de France flew with French-Ukrainian crews. The air parade was also supplemented by aircraft from several European partners, including Germany, Spain, Italy, Norway, Poland, Greece and Croatia.

Politically, the appearance was closely linked to the meeting of the Coalition of the Willing held in Paris on 13 July. According to the French presentation, the group of 35 states is intended to prepare a lasting peace order for Ukraine and enable robust security guarantees. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended the celebrations as guest of honor. Numerous heads of state and government from the participating countries were also among the guests.

Paris emphasizes that the coalition complements NATO and does not replace it. This is important from an institutional perspective: France and its partners want to expand Europe’s capacity for joint planning, arms cooperation and deterrence without calling into question the architecture of the transatlantic alliance. The parade thus made clear that the European security debate is no longer focused solely on national defense budgets, but on a joint military capacity to act.

The political framework was the theme of a strategic awakening of Europe proclaimed by the government. France has considerably increased its defense budget since 2017; according to figures from the parade’s context, it rose from 32 billion euros to more than 57 billion euros today. The increase is intended to strengthen operational readiness, ammunition production, air defense and the capacity for cooperation with allies.

According to French media, this was Emmanuel Macron’s tenth and final military parade of his two terms in office. Alongside the foreign and security policy message, the national character of the celebration was maintained. The ceremonial music also incorporated motifs from popular culture. However, the focus was the strategic statement: France wants to combine military visibility and European cohesion as a response to persistent insecurity on Europe’s eastern flank.
