Macron’s final July 14 parade focuses on European defence

Paris – 14/07/2026: Emmanuel Macron received the traditional military parade on the Champs-Élysées on France’s National Day for the last time during his current presidential term. This year’s event was explicitly designed as a demonstration of Europe’s ability to act. The focus was on Ukraine, its allies and the strategic awakening of Europe promoted by Paris.

The parade proceeded from Place Charles de Gaulle to Place de la Concorde. According to the Élysée Palace, 6,686 servicewomen and servicemen took part on foot; 315 vehicles were also deployed, including 98 motorcycles, 98 aircraft, 31 helicopters and 193 horses of the Republican Guard. The event thus underscored not only France’s military capabilities but also the integration of its armed forces into a broader European security concept.

At the head of the column marched nearly 500 representatives from 35 countries of the so-called Coalition of the Willing. Around 30 heads of state and government watched the parade in Paris. This group is primarily supported by France and the United Kingdom; it is preparing security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. Its presence on National Day therefore gave the parade a distinct foreign-policy character.

Particular attention was focused on the Ukrainian armed forces. Ukrainian military personnel marched along the avenue with their national flags, while two Ukrainian pilots trained in France flew as second pilots in Mirage-2000B fighter jets alongside French crews. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took a seat in the honorary stand next to Macron and other leading European politicians. The staging combined symbolic solidarity with visible military cooperation.

The French presidency dedicated the parade to the guiding idea of a strategically more self-confident Europe. This concerns the political and military ability of European states to defend their security interests more independently in the face of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The demonstration of ground, air and support capabilities was also intended to show the readiness for deployment of the French armed forces and their partners.

For Macron, the event also had domestic political significance. July 14 is the main national holiday of the French Republic and commemorates the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789. Since the beginning of his first term in 2017, Macron has repeatedly used the parade to emphasize France’s role as a nuclear power, its European leadership ambitions and the modernization of the armed forces. The 2026 event brought these themes together particularly closely.

After the parade, according to the Élysée Palace, Macron received wounded personnel from the armed forces, gendarmerie, national police, customs and civil protection at the presidential palace. Thus, the last National Day of his current term was defined by a combination of military representation, domestic security and international alliance policy. The parade was perceived less as a traditional ceremony than as a political message to Europe’s partners and adversaries.
