Paris – 14 July 2026: Emmanuel Macron presided for the last time during his current term over the traditional military parade on the Champs-Élysées marking the French National Day. This year’s edition was explicitly conceived as a demonstration of Europe’s capacity to act. The focus was on Ukraine, its supporters and Europe’s strategic awakening promoted by Paris.
The parade followed the route from Place de l’Étoile to Place de la Concorde. According to the Élysée Palace, 6,686 male and female soldiers took part on foot; in addition, there were 315 vehicles, including 98 motorcycles, 98 aircraft, 31 helicopters and 193 horses from the Republican Guard. The event thus underscored not only France’s military capability, but also the integration of the armed forces into a broader European security concept.
At the head marched almost 500 members from 35 states of the so-called Coalition of the Willing. Around 30 heads of state and government watched the parade in Paris. The group is backed primarily by France and the United Kingdom; it is preparing security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. Its presence at the National Day therefore gave the parade a clear foreign-policy character.
The Ukrainian armed forces received special attention. Ukrainian soldiers marched along the avenue with their national flags, and two Ukrainian pilots trained in France flew as co-pilots in Mirage-2000B fighter jets alongside French crews. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy occupied a place in the honorary stand alongside Macron and other prominent European leaders. The staging combined symbolic solidarity with visible military cooperation.
The French presidency placed the parade under the banner of a strategically more self-confident Europe. This refers to the political and military capacity of European states to defend their security interests more independently in the face of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The presentation of land, air and support capabilities was also intended to make the operational readiness of the French armed forces and their partners visible.
For Macron, the event also had domestic political significance. July 14 is the central state celebration of the French Republic and commemorates the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789. Since the start of his first term in 2017, Macron has repeatedly used the parade to emphasize France’s role as a nuclear power, its European leadership ambitions and the modernization of the armed forces. The 2026 edition brought these themes together with particular intensity.
After the parade, Macron received at the presidential palace, according to the Élysée, wounded members of the armed forces, the Gendarmerie, the National Police, customs and civil protection. The combination of military representation, internal security and international alliance policy thus marked the final National Day of his current term. The parade was understood less as a traditional ceremony than as a political message directed at Europe’s partners and adversaries.
