Early Heatwave in France: Health Risks and Impact on Events

France is in the midst of an unusually early and intense heatwave at the end of May 2026. Cities like Bordeaux and Paris have recorded temperatures reaching 36°C, which is well above the average for this time of year.

This extreme heat has already caused health emergencies. At a running event held in the Île-de-France region last Sunday, several participants received emergency treatment due to the heat. Additionally, a fatality was recorded at another running event in Paris, though the exact cause has not yet been definitively determined.

The current heatwave is the result of the ‘Spanish Plume’ phenomenon, where hot air moves from Spain to France. This meteorological event causes a sudden and marked increase in temperature compared to this period.

In recent years, France has repeatedly experienced the effects of heatwaves. In the summer of 2025, around 6,000 deaths were directly linked to high temperatures, demonstrating the serious health risks posed by extreme heat conditions.

In response to the current heatwave, Météo-France has unusually issued ‘Yellow Heatwave Warning’ (Vigilance Jaune Canicule) for 13 western departments in May. This warning particularly calls for special attention to vulnerable groups.

The early and intense heat in France clearly highlights the growing challenge of dealing with extreme weather events. Such occurrences are expected to become more frequent in the future, requiring heightened awareness and preparedness at all levels.
