Immigration: “We want to offer the French a major referendum,” says Yoann Gillet, Spokesperson of the Rassemblement National

Paris – 25.05.2026: Yoann Gillet, Deputy of Gard and Spokesperson of the Rassemblement National, reaffirmed on Monday, May 25, in an interview with Franceinfo the intention of his party leader Jordan Bardella to hold a referendum to control immigration in France. Gillet explained that the Rassemblement National wants to offer the French a major referendum to regain control over immigration policy.

This position is consistent with earlier statements by Jordan Bardella, who as early as February 2025 in Montélimar had called for a referendum on immigration. He emphasized that the “migrant influx” in France requires a direct appeal to the population through a referendum.

Furthermore, in January 2026 Jordan Bardella criticized a “record level” of immigration in France in 2025. He called for the restoration of control over immigration policy and stressed that France has never before taken in so many foreigners.

The idea of a referendum on immigration policy is not new. As early as May 2025, Bruno Retailleau, then Minister of the Interior, had emphasized the need for a constitutional amendment to allow such a referendum. He argued that without a referendum, full control over immigration could not be regained.

According to a survey from September 2025, 72% of French people were in favor of a referendum on immigration policy. This high approval rate underscores the public’s interest in direct participation in decisions regarding immigration.

The discussion about a referendum on immigration policy remains a central topic in French politics. While the Rassemblement National and other political actors call for the direct involvement of the population, they face the challenge of overcoming constitutional hurdles to hold such a referendum.
