Tour de France: Solaison Challenges the Yellow Jersey

Plateau de Solaison – 19 July 2026: The road narrows, the gradient is merciless, and the air above the alpine pastures of Haute-Savoie grows thinner. On Sunday, Stage 15 of the Tour de France takes the field from Champagnole to the Plateau de Solaison, a new finish venue for the race. After 183.9 kilometres and 3,950 metres of elevation gain, the first major Alpine test of this edition awaits.

The sharp start is scheduled for 13:20 in Champagnole, with the finish expected around 17:41 depending on the race pace. The peloton first rolls through the Jura before the route turns via Ain towards Haute-Savoie. The profile offers opportunities for a breakaway, but the decisive kilometres clearly lie in the final third.

The Col de la Croisette on the Saleve is the first spark: almost five kilometres at an average gradient of 11.2 percent leave no time for feeling things out. Anyone who is left without support or without the legs there will struggle to regain their rhythm over the following rolling 36 kilometres. The teams of the general classification contenders must decide early how much strength to preserve for the finale.

The final selection is expected to be forced by the closing climb to the Plateau de Solaison. For 11.3 kilometres, the narrow road climbs through the villages of the Bornes massif at an average gradient of 9.1 percent. This is not a mountain for prolonged control in the slipstream, but a ramp for repeated changes of pace, for solo fighters and for riders who can time their attack precisely.

According to the current live coverage by L’Equipe, Tadej Pogacar starts the day wearing the Yellow Jersey. His lead and the exact order in the general classification will not be assessed further before the start: the stage has not yet begun, so no result has been determined. The only certainty is that Solaison can reshape the hierarchy on the rest day.

The plateau lies at 1,497 metres above the village of Brizon and is hosting a Tour stage finish for the first time. The climb has already made history in the Criterium du Dauphine: stages finished there in 2017 and 2022. The organisers are now using the same setting, but with a considerably longer approach and the pressure of a Tour Sunday.

For Pogacar and his rivals, this stage is therefore more than an assault on the stage victory. It is a stress test of team depth, nutrition and nerves, immediately before the rest day on 20 July 2026 in Haute-Savoie. The winner will only be decided at the summit; until then, Solaison remains a mountain that hands out no early honours.
