Two Firefighters Die in Major Blaze Near Bordeaux-Mérignac

Mérignac – 22/07/2026: A major fire near Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport has claimed the lives of two firefighters. The two members of the Gironde departmental fire and rescue service were dispatched to the incident on Tuesday afternoon, July 21. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed the deaths during questions to the government in the National Assembly. The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially disclosed.

According to the information available so far, the fire broke out in the early afternoon in a densely vegetated area near long-term parking lots, car dealerships and logistics facilities. Black smoke was visible far beyond the Bordeaux metropolitan area. Air traffic was also temporarily disrupted because of the fire’s immediate proximity to the runways. Ground crews and aerial resources attempted to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby facilities.

According to Marc Vermeulen, head of the SDIS 33 fire service, the two firefighters were in an emergency vehicle that was surrounded by flames during the initial phase of the firefighting operation. The exact sequence of events remains unclear. What is known so far is that the fire spread with exceptional force through the drought-stricken vegetation.

Some 120 firefighters with around 60 vehicles, as well as a helicopter and two civil protection water-bombing aircraft, were deployed. By late afternoon, crews had managed to bring the fire under control. According to preliminary information from incident command, 26 hectares of land were affected by the blaze. However, the operation was overshadowed by the deaths of the two colleagues as firefighting efforts continued.

The Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation. It is intended to determine where the fire originated and under what circumstances the vehicle became trapped. According to judicial authorities, 25 investigators were sent to the fire scene, supported by forensic specialists. Whether human involvement, an accident or a criminal act may have played a role remains open.

Prefect Sophie Brocas expressed her sympathy to the families, friends and firefighters of Gironde. President Emmanuel Macron also offered his condolences to the relatives. The city of Mérignac intends to pay tribute to the two firefighters who died in the line of duty. Mayor Thierry Trijoulet also pointed out that the municipality is particularly vulnerable in the current dry summer conditions.

The fire occurred on a day of very high wildfire risk in Gironde. However, the causes of the blaze and the specific circumstances in which the two firefighters died remain the subject of ongoing investigations. Until their findings are available, speculation would be inappropriate. For the Gironde fire service, an operation intended to secure a threatened area has above all become a profound personal loss.
