Two firefighters die in major blaze near Bordeaux-Mérignac

Mérignac – 22 July 2026: A serious fire near Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport claimed the lives of two firefighters. Both members of the Gironde department’s fire and rescue service responded to the incident on Tuesday afternoon, 21 July. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed the deaths during the government question session in the National Assembly. The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially released.

According to available information, the fire broke out in the early afternoon in a densely wooded area near long-stay car parks, car dealerships and logistics areas. A column of black smoke was visible from much of the Bordeaux metropolitan area. Due to the immediate proximity of the runways, air traffic was also temporarily affected. Emergency crews on the ground and in the air tried to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby facilities.

According to Marc Vermeulen, head of the SDIS 33 fire service, the two firefighters were in an emergency vehicle that was surrounded by flames during the initial phase of the firefighting operation. The exact sequence of events is still unclear. For now, it is only certain that the fire spread with extraordinary violence through the dried vegetation.

About 120 firefighters with around 60 vehicles, as well as a helicopter and two water-bombing aircraft from the Civil Protection authority, took part in the operation. By late afternoon, the fire had been brought under control. According to provisional data from the incident command, the fire affected 26 hectares. However, the ongoing firefighting efforts were overshadowed by the death of the two colleagues.

The Bordeaux Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation. It is to determine where the fire started and under what conditions the vehicle became trapped. According to the judiciary, 25 investigators were sent to the scene of the fire, supported by forensic investigation specialists. It is not yet known whether a human cause, an accident or a crime is being considered.

Prefect Sophie Brocas expressed her condolences to the families, friends and firefighters of Gironde. Head of State Emmanuel Macron also conveyed his condolences to the relatives. The city of Mérignac wishes to pay tribute to the two firefighters who died in the line of duty. Mayor Thierry Trijoulet also noted that the municipality is particularly vulnerable in this dry summer situation.

The fire occurred on a day of very high forest-fire risk in Gironde. However, the causes of the fire and the specific circumstances in which the two firefighters died are the subject of an ongoing investigation. Until its results are known, speculation is inappropriate. For the firefighters of Gironde, an operation intended to protect a threatened area represents above all a profound personal loss.
