Forest Fire in Crete: Two Firefighters Die During Operation Near Rethymno

Rethymno – 01/08/2026: Two firefighters have died in a forest fire in the southern Cretan region of Rethymno. The men died on Wednesday, July 29, during a major operation against the flames. The Greek Fire Service confirmed the deaths but initially did not release a conclusive account of what happened. According to local reports, the emergency personnel may have lost their bearings in the dense smoke. No official confirmation of this was available as of August 1.

The fire broke out in the Rethymno region on Wednesday afternoon. According to the Fire Service, more than 150 personnel were at times fighting the flames on the ground. Four helicopters and four firefighting aircraft supported them from the air. Strong winds fueled the blaze and hampered operations in the partly difficult-to-access terrain. Under such conditions, the direction of the fire and the spread of smoke can change within a short time.

Authorities ordered precautionary evacuations for several settlements near the fire area. The coast guard kept two patrol boats and private vessels on standby to bring people to safety by sea if necessary. The confirmed information initially did not indicate whether, or how many, residents or holidaymakers were actually evacuated by sea.

Crete is among the regions of Greece whose economy depends particularly heavily on summer tourism. Evacuation orders during the peak season therefore affect not only the local population but also workers and travelers. Reports of further fires in the Cyclades, several thousand evacuees and affected French tourists could not be independently confirmed using current official information by the editorial deadline.

The Greek Civil Protection Authority had warned of a very high forest fire risk in parts of the country for Wednesday, July 29. In Crete, the fire service, forestry services and civil protection were on heightened alert. Greece’s legally defined forest fire season runs from May 1 to October 31. Dried-out vegetation, high temperatures and wind can quickly drive fires toward settlements and transport routes.

The deaths of the two men also underscore the risks faced by emergency personnel. While residents left their homes and holidaymakers were taken to safe areas, the firefighters worked in limited visibility and under changing wind conditions. The Greek Fire Service paid tribute to the deceased as personnel who lost their lives while protecting people, property and nature.

On the Peloponnese, another firefighter died the same day during a separate fire operation. The cause of the fire near Rethymno and the exact circumstances of the two deaths were still under investigation as of August 1.
