Ardèche tightens penalties for mobile phone use while driving: driving ban up to six months

Privas – 01.06.2026: In the French region of Ardèche, a new regulation comes into effect today that mandates the immediate revocation of the driver’s license for drivers caught using a phone while driving. This measure was introduced by Benoît Trévisani, the prefect of Ardèche, and aims to improve road safety and reduce the number of accidents.

The decision, which comes into force on June 1, 2026, was made after a series of serious traffic accidents involving mobile phone use. In 2026, 19 people have already died on the roads of Ardèche, matching the total number of fatalities in 2025. A particularly tragic accident occurred on May 1, 2026, in Vernosc-lès-Annonay, where five young people lost their lives. These incidents prompted authorities to decide on stricter measures.

From now on, drivers caught with a mobile phone in hand while driving can expect an immediate administrative revocation of their driver’s license. The duration of the driving ban can last up to six months, depending on the severity of the offense and following the prefect’s assessment of the case. In addition to the driving ban, there is also a fine of 135 euros and the loss of three points on the driving license at stake.

This measure is part of a broader plan to improve road safety in the region. Since January 15, 2026, stricter penalties have been introduced for other traffic violations, including speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The “Zero Tolerance for Traffic Accidents” plan also includes increased controls, the establishment of an office for safety and traffic prevention, as well as preventive measures for young drivers and motorcyclists.

The decision by Ardèche follows similar initiatives in other French departments. Already in November 2025, the Département Landes introduced immediate revocation of the driver’s license for mobile phone use while driving. Other departments, including Charente-Maritime, Lot-et-Garonne, and Pas-de-Calais, have taken similar measures. This development shows a trend toward stricter penalties for traffic violations related to mobile phone use while driving.

Authorities emphasize that using mobile phones while driving poses a significant risk to road safety. Studies have shown that typing a message while driving increases the risk of accidents twenty-fivefold. Therefore, the new regulation is seen as a necessary step to reduce the number of traffic accidents and road fatalities in the region.

Drivers in Ardèche are advised to be aware of the new regulation and to avoid using mobile phones while driving to prevent both legal consequences and possible accidents.
