Bernadette Chirac, Former First Lady of France, Passed Away

Paris – 12.06.2026: Bernadette Chirac, widow of former French President Jacques Chirac, passed away on June 5, 2026, at the age of 93. She was born in Paris and accompanied her husband throughout his long political career, which took him from the mayoralty of Paris to the Élysée Palace.

As First Lady from 1995 to 2007, Bernadette Chirac played a significant role in French political life. She was appreciated for her humor and composure, even in the face of recurring rumors about her husband’s private life. Despite the rather restrained role of a First Lady, her presence was always strong and her influence palpable.

Her social commitment was diverse and lasting. She became particularly well known for her long-standing leadership of the “Pièces Jaunes” foundation, which worked to improve the living conditions of sick children in French hospitals. Over several decades, the foundation raised millions of euros that were specifically used for pediatric wards. This profile of activity distinctly shaped her public image and brought great recognition to the foundation.

Bernadette Chirac was politically active long before her husband became president. In 1971, she was elected to the municipal council of Sarran in the Corrèze region—she is the only First Lady of France to have held her own political mandate. Her engagement on the local level, as well as her support for Jacques Chirac’s political career, played a significant role in his rise in French politics.

After her husband’s death in 2019, Bernadette Chirac largely withdrew from public life. Nevertheless, she was regarded as a respected figure both within the political landscape and society. Her tireless efforts for social projects and her influence in political circles were always appreciated.

The death of Bernadette Chirac caused widespread sorrow in France. Politicians from all sides emphasized her contributions to the country and her social commitment. President Emmanuel Macron honored her as “a great lady of the heart” and announced a public tribute in Paris.

On June 12, 2026, the funeral was held at the Basilica of Sainte-Clothilde in Paris, a place of special significance as she had married Jacques Chirac there in 1956. The mourning ceremony was held in close family circles.

Bernadette Chirac leaves behind a significant legacy in French politics and society. Her dedication to social causes and her role as a political companion continue to shape the memory of her.
