Mayor of Alès brought to safety by RAID after threats

Alès – 21.07.2026: The mayor of Alès, Christophe Rivenq, was brought to safety from his home by officers from the RAID during the night into Tuesday. The operation was prompted by a new threat situation near his home. Media reported a tip-off concerning a possible vehicle rigged with explosives. There was initially no official confirmation of this specific suspicion.

The conservative local politician said on Tuesday that he was well. The security measures followed several acts of intimidation directed at him and those around him in recent days. Rivenq has been under police protection since July 17. According to sources close to the Interior Ministry, the protective measures were stepped up on Monday evening because of repeated threats.

As early as July 16, relatives of the mayor discovered threatening graffiti on the property wall. An envelope containing two nine-millimeter rounds of ammunition and a letter with death threats had also been placed in a mailbox. Responsibility was attributed to a group describing itself as the new generation of the criminal organization DZ Mafia.

The investigation concerns suspected threats, violence or intimidation against an elected official in connection with his office, as well as possible insults. Initially, the unit specializing in organized crime in the Gard department handled the case. According to media reports, proceedings are now being led by the regional specialized court in Marseille.

The RAID is a national special unit of the French police deployed, among other things, in acute threat situations, serious violent crimes and terrorist incidents. Based on the information available so far, the operation in Alès did not mean that an explosive device had been found or defused. Authorities have not publicly provided details about the specific threat assessment, the vehicle checked or any possible suspects.

Rivenq was confirmed as mayor of Alès in the municipal election on March 22, 2026. The city in the Gard department is now responding to an extraordinary series of threats against its mayor. For investigators, the priority is to clarify the origin and credibility of the threatening letters, the background to the graffiti and the reason for the nighttime police operation.

The case once again draws attention to the risks faced by local politicians from organized crime and targeted intimidation. The security situation remains tense for Rivenq and the city administration. Authorities have not announced any arrest so far, nor have they definitively confirmed any link between the earlier threats and the security incident reported during the night.
