A French journey improves when you distrust the shortest route

The quickest road is rarely the most French one. I have learned to leave time for a smaller road, a canal path, a town square with one decent cafe and no particular fame. France rewards the traveller who lets the map breathe.

Check the traffic, of course, but do not let the clock write the whole itinerary.
