Paris – 14 July 2026: France celebrated its national holiday with a military parade explicitly focused on the guiding theme of Europe’s strategic awakening. President Emmanuel Macron reviewed the troops on the Champs-Élysées. The ceremony combined the traditional celebration of the Republic with a security message: France sees its armed forces as an instrument of national sovereignty and part of a closer European defence architecture.
According to the Élysée Palace, 6,686 soldiers marched on foot in the parade, along with 315 vehicles, including 98 motorcycles, as well as 98 aircraft, 31 helicopters and 193 horses from the Republican Guard. The deployment was therefore significantly larger than the previous year’s parade. The armed forces presented not only ceremonial formations, but also capabilities in air defence, reconnaissance, mobility and the deployment of heavy ground forces.
The event gained particular political significance through the involvement of the Coalition of the Willing. It includes 35 states which, under French-British leadership, aim to prepare security guarantees for Ukraine after the end of hostilities. According to official figures, nearly 500 soldiers from partner states took part in the parade. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended as guest of honour.
The parade on the Champs-Élysées was preceded on 13 July by a coalition summit at the Hôtel national des Invalides. Macron chaired it together with the British Prime Minister and the German Chancellor. Talks focused on continuing support for Ukraine’s defence, operational security guarantees for a future peace order, and measures against Russia’s evasion of sanctions, particularly through the so-called shadow fleet.
The French government also linked the military ceremony to the protection of national territory. In addition to the army, navy, and air and space forces, the gendarmerie, police, customs and civil protection were also visibly represented. This connection is intended to highlight that external defence and internal security must work more closely together under conditions shaped by hybrid threats, cyberattacks and growing geopolitical tensions.
For Macron, the parade offers a platform to underline France’s claim to strategic capability. At the same time, the invitation to European partners sends a signal against the impression of political fragmentation on the continent. The presence of numerous foreign delegations therefore gives the national holiday a foreign-policy dimension that goes beyond the national culture of remembrance associated with 14 July.
The show of strength nevertheless remains primarily symbolic. Europe’s military capabilities remain unevenly distributed, and the practical implementation of robust security guarantees for Ukraine depends on political decisions, available troops and lasting coordination with the United States. Paris nevertheless used 14 July to make its aspiration for European cohesion visible.
