Lalucq Eases Pressure on Glucksmann Ahead of 2027

Paris – 14 July 2026: Aurore Lalucq has expressed understanding for the growing impatience over a possible presidential candidacy by Raphaël Glucksmann. The MEP and co-chair of Place Publique said on Tuesday on Franceinfo that she could understand these expectations. At the same time, she made clear that Glucksmann has not yet officially made his decision.

On 12 July, the MEP said he wanted to decide by the end of the summer whether to run for the Élysée Palace in 2027. He did not want merely to be another candidate, but to assess whether he was the right person to unite the social democratic, environmentalist and pro-European camp. He is therefore sticking to a timetable he outlined at the end of May, with a three-month deadline.

Lalucq’s remarks point to a strategic dilemma for Place Publique. The 46-year-old Glucksmann has positioned himself as a possible leading figure of the non-Mélenchon left through public appearances, his book and a major event in Aubervilliers on 13 June. A formal candidacy, however, would immediately intensify questions over alliances, primaries and competing claims within the left-wing party landscape.

Relations with the Parti socialiste are particularly important in this context. The Socialists recently decided on a primary process for the 2027 presidential election. Place Publique welcomed the willingness for dialogue opened up by the Socialists, but Glucksmann has so far not publicly committed himself to taking part in the process. His entourage has repeatedly indicated that a candidate from the political centre-left, to the left of La France insoumise, must not be weakened by additional internal competition.

The delay is therefore not merely personal in nature. Glucksmann is seeking to link his decision to a reshaping of the balance of power among Socialists, Greens and smaller social democratic groups. His supporters hope for a candidacy that could translate the pro-European left-wing camp strengthened in the 2024 European election into a national presidential strategy. Whether this will result in a joint platform remains open, however.

Lalucq’s intervention above all signals unity within Place Publique. The party does not want to ignore public expectations, but apparently intends to determine the timing of the decision itself. For Glucksmann, the key question will be whether he can organise sufficient support beyond his own party by late summer while also finding a credible answer to the question of the primary.
