Beirut – 01.06.2026: The Israeli armed forces have reportedly taken control of the historic Beaufort fort in southern Lebanon. This fort is considered an extremely strategic stronghold of Hezbollah, a Shiite militia, and is located in close proximity to the Israeli border. The capture marks a new, clear escalation phase in the weeks-long military conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
The fighting over the fort and the surrounding area continues. Despite repeated international calls, especially from the United Nations, urging de-escalation, heavy fighting is still taking place. Hezbollah officially denies the loss of the fort but continues to contest the region. Because of its location on a plateau, Beaufort fort enables surveillance and control over the adjacent areas, giving it significant military value.
The political reaction to the capture of the fort is also clearly felt in Europe. French President Emmanuel Macron sharply criticized the recent escalation and warned of further destabilization of the Middle East. He called for the immediate resumption of peace talks and emphasized the urgency of protecting the civilian population from the consequences of the conflict. At the same time, Macron underlined the necessity to promote the political resolution of the conflict.
Parallel stalled negotiations between the US and Iran, which also have considerable influence on the situation in Lebanon. The US demands a stronger withdrawal of Iranian influence in the region, while Iran continues to confirm its support for Hezbollah. This relentless struggle significantly contributes to prolonging and worsening the conflict.
The international community is following the situation with great concern, especially due to the danger that the escalation could spread across the entire Middle East. UN organizations are already warning of a worsening humanitarian crisis: numerous civilian casualties and refugee flows characterize the current situation. Medical care and infrastructure are also heavily affected in many places.
Israel justifies its offensive by the strengthening of Hezbollah, which regularly threatens the country with rockets. This military action is intended to restore security in the border area and prevent future attacks. However, security experts point out that the ongoing fighting further strains the already fragile balance in the region and could trigger new conflicts in the long term.
The situation at the border remains extremely tense and the front lines change hardly at all. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether Beaufort fort remains under Israeli control for a prolonged period and how the conflict in the Middle East further develops.
